At Addmore, we believe that learning a foreign language fosters the children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. It allows for children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

Through the framework of the National Curriculum 2014, Languages: French aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources; 
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation;
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt; 
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Our aims in teaching French are:

  • to foster an interest in language learning by introducing children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and accessible to all pupils; 
  • to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and how it works;
  • to provide an added perspective on first language teaching and learning e.g. grammar in English; 
  • to support oracy and literacy, and in particular develop speaking and listening skills; 
  • to help children develop their awareness of cultural similarities and differences; 
  • to develop positive attitudes to other languages and cultures;
  • to raise awareness of aspects of home culture by encountering other cultures and raising awareness of citizenship issues;
  • to lay the foundations for future language study by pupils.

At Addmore we learn French from Lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3). Children not only learn the spoken language during our French lessons, but also learn about French traditions and events. We feel that by immersing the children in the language and culture, they will develop a deeper understanding of France as a nation and will adopt a joy of learning the language. 

The children learn French mostly through oral work, song, and fun interactive games that they play in whole class sessions, small groups and pairs.  Written work is also produced to consolidate their learning. Children start by learning the common everyday language and key vocabulary used in France e.g. numbers, greetings and emotion words and move on to being able to discuss their likes/ dislikes, describing themselves and others and talk about their local area. By providing a French curriculum, which is progressive in terms of both knowledge, skills and vocabulary, the children acquire new knowledge; revisiting this knowledge at intervals in order to help make it ‘stick’, and build connections within and across topics, thereby strengthening their ability to master what they learn.  It is expected that by the end of Key Stage 2 children are able to write a paragraph in French which is accurate in terms of vocabulary and grammar. 

At Addmore, we subscribe to online resources such as Languagenut.  Children receive their own logins, which allows them to continue their learning journey at home with their families. These websites enable children to continue to learn French at their own speed using games and fun activities. 
French is a foundation subject at Key Stage 2 only (Year 3-6), taught in blocks through ‘topic’ themes, usually for half a term at a time. Through these themes our children will develop their knowledge and understanding of the subject.

We integrate our Curriculum Drivers into all of our units of work. French supports the delivery of our Curriculum Drivers: 

  • Exploring Opportunities – We enhance learning by taking part in visits as well as welcoming visitors to our school for talks and demonstrations. E.g. Feeder secondary school language specialists.
  • Outdoor Education - We take every opportunity to plan lessons that take part outdoors. This could be in our school grounds or the local community.
  • Christian Values - Our Christian Values underpin all that we do in our school and exemplify the qualities we hope to instil in our pupils before they leave us. French enables us to reinforce our Christian Values e.g. Courage, perseverance, patience and trust – learning something new and sticking at it; working in pairs to develop conversation.
  • Learning for Life – We want our children develop a love of learning, so that they continue to be curious and learn throughout their lives. See how root words are shared across languages; supporting spelling in English.
  • Our Place in the World – We want our pupils to be considerate, kind and thoughtful citizens and to value all life and our planet. Geography plays a big part in this driver as we support pupils to develop a good understanding of other French speaking communities across the wider world.
