Wrekin Weekly Snapshot

Class: Wrekin Year: 2023 - 2024

W/B 5th February

We absolutely loved it this week when the PTFA came in and served us pancakes with all sorts of tasty toppings! After, we found out more about the history of Shrove Tuesday and discussed what me might give up for lent.

We have been working hard this week to create acrostic poems for the Poetry Bus competition. We practiced writing this kind of poem using our favourite person for inspiration and then wrote a new one about any subject we liked. Look out for some of them appearing on our class page.

Well done again to Year 2 for winning this week's TT Rockstar tournament and for Edward being our ultimate champion! Who will have a go over half term and aim for top spot?

W/B 15th January

What a busy week we have had! In Geography we headed outside to record all of the features of our school grounds. We have taken photos and labelled these and will be using what we found to help us produce maps of the school.

In Science we continue to study materials and how some materials are more useful for certain jobs. We had a sugar race, and tested different materials to see which one made the best spoon, to help us move our sugar from one bowl to the other.

In RE we have been exploring why a Mezuzah is special to Jewish people and then made our own Mezuzah boxes, placing tiny scrolls inside with important messages we want the world to think about, such as 'be kind', 'love your friends and family', 'care for our earth'.

On Thursday we buckled up and headed off into Space! We took part in an online workshop, finding out all about space travel alongside Adderley and many other schools around the country. We will use what we found out to support our story writing in English.

Well done to Year 2 for winning this week's TT Rockstar tournament and to Georgia for being the top scorer.

W/B 13th November

This week we have been using our number bond knowledge to support our addition work. We have been adding to the next 10 and then across 10 using concrete and pictoral methods. To help at home, knowing different bonds for numbers up to and including 10 will be a huge support.

We have enjoyed reading the start of 'Owl who was afraid of the dark' and using adjectives and adverbs in our descriptive writing.

In History we are learning about the Orville brothers and how they created the first piloted, engine-powered plane that flew for 12 seconds. We took part in some roleplay to help us imagine how the people involved might have been feeling and what they might have said.

At the forest this week some of us have been using loppers with Miss Archer and some of us enjoyed exploring what sounds we could make, after reading about how ears work in Guided Reading.

W/B 23rd October

On Monday we were visited by Lucy, our mental health practitioner, who talked to us about feelings and emotions. We explored how some feelings make us feel good and some might not. Afterwards, Lucy worked with a small group of us to discuss feelings further. She is looking forward to working with more of us after half term.

In PSHE we have been exploring how to keep ourselves healthy and safe. This week we discussed why it is important to eat a healthy and balanced diet. We used our cutting skills to prepare a delicious fruit salad to enjoy for our snack at break time.

In Guided Reading this week the Year 2's explored parts of the story 'The Troll' by getting into character and taking part in some role play. After a short rehearsal they put on a mini performance for the Year 1's. We can see some of our class are destined for a future on the stage!

We spent more time outside this week taking part in a short field study as part of our Geography unit. We recorded the weather observed, including temperature, rain fall and wind. We discussed the difference between climate and weather, and agreed that the UK has a temperate climate.

W/B 16th October

What a busy week we have had! We started off exploring our outdoor areas for micro- habitats and signs of Autumn. We discussed how some animals will stay in their micro-habitat their entire lives!

In DT we have been exploring shapes that are strong and sturdy and then used our findings to design a chair for Baby Bear. This week we worked in pairs to make our chairs and next week we will be testing and improving them.

We were really sad that our trip was cancelled this week, but that didn't stop us having a brilliant day. We started by listening to the story of Swampy from Bewilderville, and meeting all of the characters. Then we went on a hunt to find where they had all hidden because they are very shy creatures. We created our own maps and stories for the characters and then headed outside to enjoy a splash around in the huge puddles! We even enjoyed a picnic in class and a short film called 'Bog Baby'.

W/B 9th October

This week we brought our toothbrushes into school as part of our current PSHE unit, Keeping Healthy. We watched a video on brushing technique and discussed when and how long we should brush our teeth. Then we had some fun brushing our teeth. We are going to be thinking about strategies to help us remember to brush our teeth.

We had a great time when the PTFA came into our class to help us start off the designs for our Christmas cards, it was sticky, messy fun!

Did you make it to our harvest service this week? If you did, you may have heard some of our autumn riddles. Here are some of our favourites:

In English we have started to create story maps based around our innovated versions of this terms focus book 'Troll Swap'. These will help us to overlearn the story and develop the vocabulary we wish to use when writing our stories next week.

W/B 2nd October

We became nature detectives in the forest this week as we identified trees by their leaves and made bark rubbings to look at the different textures. We also had fun developing our gross motor skills by balancing, climbing and crawling over and under logs and branches. This followed on from our Science investigations where we have been finding out how trees and plants change through the seasons.

We started to design our chairs for Baby Bear in DT this week. We have had to think carefully about shapes that will make a strong and sturdy structure. Over the past 4 weeks we have investigated spheres, pyramids, cubes and cylinders, witha range of experiments to find whoch shapess will be best. We also came up with a design brief to ensure we create a suitable product that Baby Bear will like.

We have also enjoyed having Miss Arthur with us this week supporting small groups while completing her teacher training.

W/B 25th September

In Science this week we headed outside with our leaf and tree guides to see if we could identify the trees on our school grounds. We also sketched the large tree on the field, making close observations about the way it looked. We will sketch it three more times over the school year to see if we can spot the changes through the seasons.

There has been lots of trollish behaviour in class this week as we took part in role play to explore the thoughts and feelings of our characters Tabitha and Timothy. We imagined we were Tabitha troll for the day and then used this to help us write a diary entry.

W/B 18th September

This week we continued to learn tying our shoelaces. We have been using the following rhyme and video to help us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biPlP4yiyQs  We have also been thinking about why it is important to make sure our laces are tied and other scenarios where rushing might not be safe.

We have had a little visitor in our classroom who left us a letter and some rather fancy Deely Boppers. Timothy Limpet is a very special troll who we will be focusing our writing around over the coming weeks.

We had another great week in the forest; this time we were building homes for bugs, we also took some measuring tapes to see who could find the longest and shortest sticks and worms.

Everyone now has their TT Rockstar log in, each week we will have a class challenge to compete in.

W/B 11th September

We have had a brilliant first week back, getting to know our new classroom and the expectations of being in Year 1 and 2.

In English we have been writing poems and riddles. We had to guess who our riddle was about. We have also written some autumn riddles to perform at our Harvest Service. In Maths we are exploring face value, recognises the 10’s and 1’s and different ways to represent this with different equipment.

We finished the week with an exciting trip to Adderley Forest, we had fun making new friends. There was a rickety bridge crossing a crocodile infested lava swamp! We can’t wait to go back next week.
